Don’t Make the Same Mistakes as Me: Lessons from a Multi-Award Winning Salon Owner

Opening your own beauty salon is a dream come true for many beauty therapists. However, running a business that not only survives but thrives is more than just providing excellent services and treatments. As a seasoned salon owner, I have learned that there are numerous mistakes that can hold you back from achieving success. Fortunately, I’ve also learned how to overcome these obstacles, and I want to share my experience with you. In this blog post, I’ll discuss my journey and the lessons I’ve learned, so you can avoid making the same mistakes I made.

Not Having a Clear Vision: One of the most significant mistakes I made when I first started was not having a clear vision of what I wanted my salon to be. I assumed that offering great services would be enough to attract and retain clients. However, without a clear vision, I found myself going in different directions, offering services that weren’t profitable or appealing to my target clientele. The solution was to take a step back and develop a clear vision for my business. I thought about what services I wanted to offer, who my target customers were, and what I stood for. Having a clear vision has helped me make better-informed decisions, attract the right customers and create a cohesive brand.

Not Investing in Marketing: At the beginning of my salon’s journey, I made the mistake of thinking that word of mouth would be enough to attract new customers. However, I soon realized that this approach was unsustainable. I didn’t just need more customers; I needed to retain them and transform them into loyal ones. So, I began investing in marketing strategies that helped me connect with more potential customers. I made sure to have an online presence and to utilize social media platforms to showcase my business. I also rewarded my loyal customers and offered promotions to keep them coming back.

Inadequate Staff Training: As my business started to grow, I found myself struggling to manage the demand. I made another mistake of hiring too quickly and not training my new staff properly. The result was a decline in service quality, and I lost several loyal customers. I learned that it’s essential to hire the right staff that fits your business goals and values, and invest time and resources in their training. This way, you can maintain consistency in your service quality and ensure that your team is on board with your vision.

Ignoring the Financials: In the early stages of business, it’s easy to ignore the financial aspects of running a salon. However, this is a big mistake that can have significant consequences. I learned the hard way that it’s essential to have a solid grasp of your cash flow, expenses, and profit margins. This knowledge will help you make informed decisions and take corrective actions when necessary. Additionally, it’s important to invest in a reliable accounting system and keep track of your financial data daily.

Not Seeking Mentoring: Running a beauty salon can be a daunting task, and it’s okay to seek guidance from those who have gained experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t figure this out until much later in my journey. Finding a mentor is invaluable as you’ll gain a sounding board and support system. They can offer valuable insights and collaborate with you to find solutions to the problems you may face. There’s no reason to make the same mistakes as others when you can learn from them.

Starting and running a beauty salon is an exciting endeavour, but it’s important to remember the common mistakes that can hold your business back. As a multi-award-winning salon owner, I’ve learned that having a clear vision, investing in marketing, training new staff, understanding your finances, and seeking mentorship can make all the difference. The key takeaway is to learn from the mistakes of others and not make them yourself. I hope that the lessons I’ve shared in this blog post will help you take your beauty salon to new heights.
